FN menu and shortcuts

FN is the menu of the current screen: hold it and the GRID becomes a menu of what this screen can do, with the second functions of the keys around it; tap it and the same menu stays open.

  • A hold is 250 ms; release sooner and FN counts as a tap.
  • Every item answers: with FN held, the tile you press turns yellow until a moment after you let go, and the bottom line of the screen says what happened (for example COPIED P01, VIEW STEP). A grey item does not apply on this screen; pressing it says "… NOT HERE".
  • Rows 1–3 belong to the page you are on; row 4 is the same on every screen: SAVE the project, TAP tempo, REC arm, SETUP (in SETUP: BACK).
  • The FN panel and its pages are gone: settings live in 0 SETUP, and FN + 1…5 do nothing.

A tap on FN: the same menu, kept open. The bottom line says whose menu it is and how to close it.

Each tile has:

  • the name on top and, top right in yellow, its FN letter: FN+C runs COPY; OK means FN+↵OK, PLAY FN+▶PLAY;
  • a second line: what it acts on (PATTERN or STEPS, ROW 2, the engine) or its state (ROLL, 120 BPM, OFF);
  • its light: half lit available, fully lit a switch that is on (shown inverse: VIEW STEP, REC ARMED, PLAY SONG), off and dotted when it cannot run now (PASTE with nothing copied, SCOPE without selected steps).

Quick controls: BPM, volume, octave

The three most used settings need no page. Hold FN: the 2×3 block at the right end of the pads, next to the GRID, is three plus/minus pairs, upper row up, lower row down (like ADD above SUB):

1234
  1. 1Hold
  2. 2BPM + / −
  3. 3Volume + / −
  4. 4Octave + / −
Hold FN: 6 7 8 up, Y U I down

BPM +1 (Y is −1). Hold to keep changing.

02HOLDFN+7

Volume: too quiet, press 7 (louder); too loud, press U.

03HOLDFN+8

Octave: 8 up, I down.

FN+7 / FN+UVOLUME + / −
FN+8 / FN+IOCTAVE + / −

They work on every screen while FN is held, repeat while held, and pop the new value up at the bottom of the screen, over the menu. While FN is held these six keys are half lit, fully lit while pressed.

note

A letter works where the menu has its item (the pad is half lit then); S and T work everywhere. Each shows its name and result at the bottom of the screen. In the menu kept open (FN not held) the pads play notes, not letters.

FN in input screens: the yellow legends

In every pop-up (text entry, the preset and sample lists, the engine picker, the RECORD panel, confirmations) holding FN shows no menu; it uses the yellow legends printed on the key caps instead:

1234567
  1. 1Hold
  2. 2Up
  3. 3Down
  4. 4Left
  5. 5Right
  6. 6Page up / down
  7. 7Search (lists)
Hold FN: the four keys at the lower right of the GRID are arrows
  • In the preset and sample lists the pads do not type: FN + F opens a search field (up to 16 characters), ↵OK filters the list by it. ESC clears the search first, a second ESC closes the list.
  • FN+ESC stops all here too, except in text entry, where ESC cancels.

Typing text

When naming something (a project, a sound, a sample) the whole keyboard types its caps:

  1. 1What you are naming
  2. 2Name and cursor

  4. 4OK accept · DEL erase · ESC cancel
  5. 5Erase (del)
  6. 6Accept
  7. 7Cancel
  8. 8Space
Typing a name: SAVE PROJECT AS.
  • Letters, digits, space (the PLAY key, not as the first character) and -; up to 24 characters (a search: 16). SAVE AS starts from the current name, or SONG.
  • The top-right key (the del cap) erases before the cursor; ↵OK accepts; ESC cancels.
  • FN + , / / move the cursor, FN + ; / . jump to the start / end, FN + del deletes after the cursor.
  • The cursor is a bar between characters, a block at the end.
